Measuring your windows for blinds is a crucial step in ensuring a proper fit and a successful installation. Blinds that are too small or large can be unsightly and may not function properly. Here are some tips on how to measure your windows for blinds:
Tools to Measure Windows for Blinds
To get started, you’ll need to equip yourself with a steel measuring tape and potentially a measuring app for your phone. iOS and Android have free measuring apps. The steel measuring tape is the most accurate way to measure your width, while the apps are the easiest to measure the height.
How to Measure Windows for Blinds
-
Determine the location of the blinds. Will the blinds be mounted inside the window frame or outside the window frame? Inside mount blinds require precise measurements, as they need to fit within the window frame, while outside mount blinds can overlap the window frame and do not require as precise measurements.
-
Measure the width of the window. For inside mount blinds, measure the width of the window at three points: at the top, middle, and bottom of the window. Use the smallest measurement and round down to the nearest 1/8 inch. For outside mount blinds, measure the width of the area where you want the blinds to be mounted. Ideally, pencil where your brackets will go above or outside your window frame and measure the distance between the markers.
- Measure the height of the window. You can use your steel measuring tape, but it is much easier to use the free measuring apps on your phone and add ~3" to your height.
- Consider any obstructions. Make sure to measure around any obstructions, such as handles or cranks, that may interfere with the operation of the blinds.
- Write down your measurements and double-check them. It's important to have accurate measurements to ensure a proper fit for your blinds.

Tips for Measuring Blinds
There are a few things to keep in mind when measuring for blinds:
1) use a steel tape measure for extra precision on the width,
2) always measure the width first and then the height,
3) for inside mounts, make sure to measure from the inside of the window frame as close to the top as you can to get the most accurate measurement,
4) for outside mounts, measure from the outside of the window frame to the desired point on the wall or window trim following a marker, and
5) leverage your phone's free measuring app so you don't have to measure the height with a steel measuring tape (adding ~3" of height to ensure enough fabric for height).
By following these simple steps, you can easily measure your windows for blinds and ensure that you have the perfect fit for your home.
